a country in the dark

While I don't talk about it on this blog (actually it is fair to say that I don't talk about anything on this blog very much), my wife and I are in the process of adopting a baby from Korea (while I say Korea, I really mean South Korea - this will be become important in a second).  This means that I actually spend some time thinking about what is happening on the Korea peninsula (of course having thought about it even once probably puts me in the top 1% of 1% of all Americans who didn't fight in the Korean War in spending time on this topic).

One of the things that amazes me about Korea is the incredibly sharp contrast between North and South.  It is mind blowing to think about two countries having a common past yet such starkly different presents.  I found this picture on the web this morning and it draws the contrast better than anything I have ever seen.  It is a satellite image of the Korean Peninsula at night and it shows the electrical grid in both countries.  The picture speaks for itself, North Korea is country entrapped in complete darkness - complete, literal darkness.
